Origin of Name:  In 1869, George H. Hammond, a butcher from Detroit, Michigan,  began a slaughterhouse which resulted in another industry surge for the area.
Some History:   Around 1847, the first permanent residents (German farmers) began to settle at the area between the Grand River and Little Calumet Rivers.   Prior to this settlement, the land that is now Hammond was a crossroads for travelers to the West.  Due to Hammond's proximity to Lake Michigan, growth in population and industry quickly followed.  Hammond is the oldest city in Lake County.
