Origin of Name:  Valparaiso means "Vale of Paradise."  The name honors US Navy Commodore David Porter (thus the county name) who commanded the frigate Essex in the battle of Valparaiso, Chile during the War of 1812.
Town/City Nickname: "Valpo" (It's easier to say than Valparaiso!)
City Site:  City of Valparaiso
Some History:   Around 1670, the area now known as Valparaiso was visited by early pioneers.  In 1822, the area's first settler, French-Canadian Joseph Bailley, established a successful fur trading post on Lake Michigan shores (about 12 miles north of today's Valparaiso).  The U. S. Government purchased the land, which included the future Valparaiso, from the Potawatomi Indians in October of 1832.
