Historic LaPorte County Courthouse
Historic LaPorte County Courthouse
LaPorte County is certainly a county with many charms:  Washington Park and Zoo, welcoming communities, exciting festivals and events, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, attractive parks, and more.

The LaPorte County Courthouse, at Lincolnway and Indiana Avenue, was built between the years of 1890 and 1894.  This impressive structure was built in the Romanesque style and designed by Brentwood Tolan, designer of several other county courthouses for the state of Indiana.

Some History: The Pottawatomie, Ottowa, and Sac Indians were the first people known to have lived in LaPorte County, Indiana, but were removed by the U. S. Government to Illinois by 1838.

In the fall of 1679, White men arrived to the area under the leadership of Frenchman Robert Cavelier La Salle.

150 years later, on March 15, 1829, the Benedict family became the first White settlers to LaPorte County in an area just north of present-day Westville.
